SparkLabs, an early-stage venture capital firm renowned for backing AI powerhouses like OpenAI Vectara, and Anthropic, is expanding its influence in the AI sector with the launch of a new $50 million fund. The AIM AI Fund, announced on Tuesday, is designed to support AI startups both within Saudi Arabia and globally, marking a significant step in the firm’s commitment to advancing artificial intelligence technology.

AIM AI Fund: A Global Commitment to AI Innovation

The AIM AI Fund will focus on investing in AI startups through SparkLabs in Saudi Arabia, as well as in promising AI ventures worldwide. SparkLabs’ move reflects the growing global interest in artificial intelligence, particularly in generative AI, which has sparked a surge of innovation and investment. With AI startups emerging rapidly, investors are eager to discover the next major player in the industry-potentially even the next OpenAI

SparkLabs’ strategy with this fund highlights the broadening scope of AI innovation beyond traditional hubs like Silicon Valley. The AIM-X accelerator, launched earlier this year in Saudi Arabia, is part of the country’s AI Mission, a national initiative aimed at bolstering AI technology over the next five years. This initiative underscores the kingdom’s ambition to become a significant player in the global AI landscape.

Global AI Landscape: A Rapidly Expanding Ecosystem

The global AI ecosystem has seen explosive growth in recent years. According to a report by Edge Delta, more than 210 AI unicorns-startups valued at over $1 billion-had emerged by March 2024. While AI is a global phenomenon, the United States continues to lead in the number of AI startups, with 4,633 founded between 2013 and 2022, according to the report.

SparkLabs plans to allocate 35% of its new fund to accelerator participants, with the remaining 65% reserved for Series A and Series B investments. These investments will focus on top AI startups worldwide, with a significant portion likely going to U.S.-based companies. The fund aims to support 50 to 70 companies, with investment amounts ranging from $200,000 for accelerator participants to between $1 million and $5 million for later-stage investments.

Supporting AI Innovation Globally

SparkLabs co-founder and CEO Bernard Moon emphasized that while the accelerator will have a minority allocation for Saudi Arabian or MENA investments, the primary focus will be on backing the best AI startups, regardless of location. The majority will be just the best AI startups regardless of location… I assume the majority in the U.S., Moon stated.

The AIM AI Fund has already begun its work, investing in 14 startups as part of its first batch, which will be announced at the GAIN Summit (Global AI Summit) in Riyadh on September 10. These startups span various industries and regions, showcasing the fund’s global reach and commitment to fostering AI innovation.

viACT: A Hong Kong-based AI video analytics platform for workplace safety and construction management.
